They were truly one of the highlights of the novel. Scottie’s family is the stuff of dreams, and I teared up a few times when reading their scenes. The ones that have your back, that sit down and listen when your world- even a teenage girl’s world- is falling apart. The ones who love you even if you’re different from them, even if they do not understand your actions or choices. Additionally, I do not believe that every toxic partner is or will always be an toxic person, you know what I mean? Scottie’s ex-girlfriend clearly had some issues of her own, but this does not mean she is a terrible person or that she is never going to be a good partner ( if she solves those issues). However, carpooling with Irene brings popularity to Scottie and the basketball team, as well as making her ex-girlfriend pretty jealous. Clearly, neither of them is very happy with this turn of events. After surveying what’s happened, the two girls’ mothers decide that, until her car is repaired, Irene will carpool with Scottie. One day, after a game lost against said ex-girlfriend, Scottie gets into a fender-bender with her nemeses, the popular cheerleader Irene. This novel follows Scottie, a teenager in high school who plays basketball and is trying to get over her ex-girlfriend. Did it live up to my expectations? Continue reading to find out! The premises had everything I absolutely adore in a YA novel: high school, queerness and fake dating turns real. Kelly Quindlen’s latest novel “She Drives me Crazy” was one of my most anticipated reads of 2021.
